Kicking off 2009 with a bang, Animal Collective return with what will no doubt prove to be one of this year’s greatest albums. Merriweather Post Pavillion expands upon the pop inclinations exhibited on 2007’s Strawberry Jam & Panda Bear’s Person Pitch. Musically, Merriweather is an interesting animal; outside of rhythm & texture, tracks consist of barely-tangible compositional elements, with the usual echoes of drone, techno & psychedelia abound. But vocally, the album is a catchy hook-fest. “My Girls” is about as refined as the rave-in-a-cave-singing- Pet Sounds approach will ever get. Elation, love & cloud-floating all surge through the heart at different points on this record. Can these guys do no wrong?
